Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs offered by the Faculty of Society & Design are purely research only. Prior to formal application, intending applicants need to give consideration to the specific research topic they wish to investigate. This should be determined in consultation with a member of the academic staff of the Faculty to see whether the Faculty can provide the appropriate supervision. The candidate must be familiar enough with the relevant research area to be able to undertake specialised study in that field. Professional outcomes The Doctor of Philosophy program provides students with the necessary research skills for academic careers in the university or research sector, or professional employment. Structure and subjects Under normal circumstances, the minimum duration for the PhD program is 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time. Maximum duration is 4 years’ full-time, 8 years’ part-time. The first year (or equivalent) of PhD candidature is probationary. Regular meetings with a supervisor are required; so candidates are normally expected to reside in Australia. Your thesis submitted for examination must be between 80,000 to 100,000 words in length, and written in English.
