This is a specialist materials programme with a variety of relevant and current industrial applications including: liquid polymer actuators used in the touch screens; polyester fabrics with industrial properties; and, lightweight and flexible polymers for disposable devices. If you have a materials or engineering background and want to develop your knowledge of the polymer materials sector, this programme is for you. The course focuses on polymers and polymer composites and concludes with an independent research project related to these areas. This programme will: prepare you for independent research while also increasing your knowledge of the structure and behaviours of different polymer materials; teach you how to decide what materials are the most suitable for the design different products, depending on the environmental impact that results; teach you about the various different types of materials processes that are currently used, as well as the techniques that are still being developed; and allow you to pursue a wide range of independent projects in areas where current research is being undertaken by the department. The methods of assessment are coursework and formal examinations, which take place in May. Many courses will include continuous assessment so that some or all of the work you do during the course counts towards the final mark. Queen Mary’s Engineering postgraduates go on to work in a wide variety of careers. The majority go on to apply their degree knowledge directly, working as engineers and scientists in various environments, or undertaking a PhD.
