The Centre for Forensic & Legal Medicine is funded directly by the Scottish Crown Office under an agreement with the University which provides forensic autopsy and toxicology services to procurators fiscal in Tayside, Fife and Central regions. The range of cases investigated includes road traffic fatalities, suicides, accidents at home and at work, homicides and sudden natural deaths, as well as in-hospital deaths under anaesthesia and other unexpected hospital deaths. Postgraduate research programmes are mainly in the field of forensic toxicology. The department has an active interest in the application of forensic medicine in support of human rights and has teaching, research and international service commitments in this field.
