On this course you will study specialised human and social geography modules such as Geographies of Development, People and Place and Urban Geographies. At the same time, you can select modules dedicated to the development of regions of the world such as Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America, and a range of complementary options from related disciplines including anthropology, politics, economics, environmental studies and media. Fieldwork and field courses are a vital part of the degree. In addition to field-work elements in a number of the taught modules we have a weekend residential trip in the first year and a longer trip in either the UK or overseas. **Course Structure** **Year 1** In your core modules, you’ll examine the key principles of human geography and their application to current issues within international development. You’ll select the remaining modules to reflect your own interests. Currently our options modules cover topics such as natural resources, social anthropology, politics, the environment, media and economics. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in a weekend residential trip. **Year 2** You’ll continue to advance your knowledge of human geography and international development alongside practical field and research skills. This will include your use of GIS. You will participate in a residential field course in either the UK or overseas. You can choose option modules from a broad selection which reflect your developing interests or career aspirations. These include geography modules, topics across different fields of international development, and the opportunity to study a foreign language. **Year 3** In your final year there’s a greater emphasis on independent study and employability. There are no core modules other than the dissertation, giving you the flexibility to tailor your studies to your interest, and you’ll undertake a final-year dissertation on a topic of your choice.
