Our Philosophy and Politics degree has been designed to allow you to engage equally with both disciplines, choosing from a wide range of modules in each. And you won’t just study each subject separately; instead you will be invited to bring them together. The philosophy experts at UEA are particularly engaged in issues that relate to the future of our planet – and to future generations. Western intellectual and cultural heritage, from the Ancient Greeks to the great works of political thought, literature, cinema and art, are other areas of philosophical focus here too. Then, with our experts in political theory, you will study democracy’s philosophical underpinnings, the clash between different world views, and the philosophical basis of utopian political systems. Taught by academic leaders in their fields, you’ll be able to choose from a range of fascinating historical and topical areas in both philosophy and in politics, including international relations. You’ll come to understand why philosophy is so central to politics – and why all politicians should have a better grasp of it. After all, politicians and commentators are often let down by their thinking, their inability to detect and deflect the shoddy rhetoric of the interviewers, and by their simple misunderstandings of basic distinctions: traps that someone who had studied philosophy wouldn’t fall into. By year two you’ll have the opportunity to decide if you want to particularly develop either Philosophy or Politics further, depending on your interests. You’ll also complete our compulsory keystone module, Philosophy of History and Politics for Second Years, which will invite you to combine the skills, methods and concepts from philosophy and politics. You can choose to follow it up with the complementary module in the following year, Philosophy of History and Politics for Third Years. In your final year you’ll also have the opportunity to take research-led special subject modules or to complete a dissertation on a topic of your own choosing. **Course Structure** **Year 1** In your first year you’ll take a suite of philosophy and politics modules designed for beginners. In philosophy, they’ll include Classic Readings in Philosophy, Modern Readings in Philosophy and Radical Philosophy. In politics, you’ll take Social and Political Theory, and Introduction to Contemporary Politics. In the spring semester you’ll choose one further module, through which you can start to specialise philosophy or politics, or you can choose from selected modules in other subjects (including the opportunity to learn a foreign language). **Year 2** By the time you enter your second year of study, you will have discovered where your main talent lies and you’ll be equipped to choose from a range of philosophy and politics modules. You will take six modules, including at least two but no more than four from each field. **Year 3** In your final year you’ll select two advanced modules from politics and two from philosophy.
