The study of Music at Monash builds on your particular talent to develop advanced skills and knowledge in your chosen specialisation, while immersing you in the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. The opportunities to diversify your study to engage in cross-cultural and cross-genre interactions will underpin the development of your creative and critical thinking abilities. You'll build your aural skills and your theoretical understanding of music with an integrated approach to listening, analysis, performance, notation and composition. Theoretical concepts in the Western classical and jazz traditions will be integrated with their practical application, and you will be exposed to the study of music and music making in various cultural, historical, social and professional settings. Electives ranging from jazz composition to music in the digital age, to East Asian music traditions to conducting, complement the common and specialist studies. You will be challenged to excel in your choice of Music Performance, Composition and music technology or Ethnomusicology and Musicology. You'll emerge fully prepared for a final examination of either your chief instrument or voice, a portfolio of compositions, creative music technology media or a written work. In this specialisation you’ll develop skills in composition for acoustic and electronic instruments, song-writing and music for other media such as film and video games. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with performance students, write for international visiting artists and make your own recording projects. Start of expanded content In addition to testing composition techniques in performance scenarios, you’ll learn how to engage with the variety of music technology in the industry for composing, recording, mixing, mastering, interactive music and software programming. Through our partnership with the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS), you’ll have access to vintage electronic equipment, and the school provides an innovative studio and recording space. Our ongoing program of local, national and international visiting artists and workshops means you’ll create established contacts with industry and will be prepared for global career opportunities
