The MSc in Statistics is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and is excellent preparation for careers in any field requiring a strong statistical background. The programme, which has recently been updated, trains professional statisticians for posts in industry, government, research and teaching. It provides a suitable preparation for careers in other fields requiring a strong statistical background. Core modules give a thorough grounding in modern statistical methods and there is the opportunity to choose additional topics to study. Statistics at Kent provides: a programme that gives you the opportunity to develop practical, mathematical and computing skills in statistics, while working on challenging and important problems relevant to a broad range of potential employers; teaching and supervision by staff who are research-active, with established reputations and who are accessible, supportive and genuinely interested in your work; advanced and accessible computing and other facilities; a congenial work atmosphere with pleasant surroundings, where you can socialise and discuss issues with a community of other students.
Students often go into careers as professional statisticians in industry, government, research and teaching but our programmes also prepare you for careers in other fields requiring a strong statistical background. You have the opportunity to attend careers talks from professional statisticians working in industry and to attend networking meetings with employers. Our graduates have started careers in diverse areas such as the pharmaceutical industry, financial services and sports betting.

Students need to have completed a Bachelor Degree (Xueshi) at a recognised institution. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree students are applying for and the undergraduate degree they have studied. For programmes, students should have a 2:1 Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 70%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions students will need to achieve a final grade of 75%; for programmes, students need to have 2:2 Bachelor degrees (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 65%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions students will need to achieve a final grade of 70%. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered with lower grades. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require student’s undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. All applications on their individual merit and welcome students from China with a wide variety of qualifications and experiences will be considered. Some departments may have slightly different entry criteria.

Students should have an IELTS score 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing and 5.5 in Speaking and Listening). Students need to have internet-based TOEFL score 90 overall including at least 22 in Reading, 21 in Writing, 17 in Listening and 20 in Speaking.
