The Health Foundation Year offers an opportunity for students to enter a degree course in the Faculty of Health who do not meet the necessary criteria for direct entry. This is often because they have not studied the subjects required or because they have gained non-traditional qualifications. The course will provide you with the requisite science knowledge, enhance your study skills and give you an introduction to the employability skills required by health professionals. A Health Foundation Year allows progression to study for a degree in Mental Health Nursing. This programme focuses on mental health and wellness. We prepare students to work with individuals of all ages, with a range of mental health experiences, in diverse settings. This challenging role demands good communication skills which will be fostered throughout the programme by skills rehearsal in the classroom and feedback from mentors in placement. Our programme adopts an approach to learning and teaching which focuses on service users using a recovery approach, and encourages you to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the safe delivery of effective mental health care. All modules integrated theory and practice elements which contribute to admission to the Professional Register. The development of clinical skills to support physical health is an integral part of the programme and is supported in practice by mentors and in the excellent Clinical Skills Laboratories by experienced lecturers.Student support is a priority, and you will be allocated a personal tutor and have access to campus-based academic advice services. Learning and teaching are delivered through a variety of strategies including lectures, seminars, and tutorials, often facilitated by service users and carers. IT based exercises and presentations are also used to encourage work relevant skills. Assessment is undertaken through using a variety of strategies including essay and examination and in practical laboratory and clinical situations. Placements are undertaken in a variety of settings, working with a mentor alongside social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. This will help you experience and prepare for a number of careers within this field.
