Celtic Celtic civilisations have contributed substantially to European literature and culture since the earliest times. Many contemporary writers in Celtic languages are internationally recognised figures, and contemporary cultural expression in Celtic languages, through various media, is vibrant. Celtic at the University of Edinburgh focuses on the Scottish Gaelic language but also covers Modern Irish and the Medieval Celtic languages. In addition to language and literature courses, we offer you the opportunity to explore Celtic history and culture in early and modern times. Archaeology Archaeology investigates the human past using material remains such as artefacts and excavated sites to reconstruct the economic, social and cultural life of early societies. You will be introduced to standard and innovative archaeological techniques and the practice and theory of archaeology. This will include the study of science-based archaeology, the study of animal and human bones and digital applications. You can choose to specialise by geographical area or period and to become involved in practical research or applied archaeology, for example through fieldwork.
