In this course you will be joining a thriving, dynamic, and internationally-renowned research community, one which regularly attracts students from around the UK and beyond. Glasgow was ranked third in the UK, and first in Scotland, for research strength in English Language and Literature in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). We also address cross period research themes, including colonial and postcolonial studies, American studies, Irish studies, medical humanities, translation, textual scholarship and editing, and creative writing. A Doctor of Philosophy may be awarded to a student whose thesis is an original work making a significant contribution to knowledge in, or understanding of, a field of study and normally containing material worthy of publication. All our postgraduate research students are allocated a supervisor who acts as the main source of academic support and research mentoring.
