Social Workers seek practical solutions to reduce stress and improve quality of life work to understand people. They help those going through challenging circumstances such as homelessness, addiction, abuse, mental illness, poverty, aging and discrimination. A dual degree in Social Work (Honours) and Criminology & Criminal Justice will train you to both the human aspect as well as the complex social issues necessary to make a difference. Structure The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)/Bachelor of Criminology & Criminal Justice is a five-year Dual degree which includes studies in the area of: Criminology Social Research and Policy Social work practice Social and behavioural sciences Careers Having skills in both Social Work and Criminology extends yours career options to work in a variety of industries from hospitals, government departments, welfare agencies, industry/corporate, community organisations, or as independent consultants. Graduates are found working in organisations such as Attorney-General's Department, National Drug, Alcohol and Research Centre, Social Policy Research Centre, State and Federal Government, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Australian Bureau of Criminology, the courts and prisons. The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) degree qualifies graduates for membership to the Australian Association of Social Works (AASW). Opportunities Social Work Honours In the fourth year of your Social Work degree you will enter one of two Honours streams: Honours Stream One - You will complete an enquiry based professional portfolio undertaken alongside your fourth year of study which integrates scholarship with your professional social work course and placement context. Honours Stream Two - You will conduct your own small practice, or conceptual research project, and have the opportunity to produce a research-based thesis. Criminology & Criminal Justice Honours A fourth year honours program is available for high achieving students in the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Honours is an intensive study program that provides the opportunity to engage in specialised and extended research, to further develop research and analytical skills and expand graduate options.
