Overview This degree develops your understanding of how medicines impact, improve and change people's lives. You'll gain knowledge of our healthcare system and how pharmacists support patient care. Based in Bendigo, you'll have access to our on-campus training pharmacy, where you'll practice patient communication skills and learn how to work as the link between medical practitioners and the public. In the first two years of your course you'll study science fundamentals along with introductory pharmacy practice subjects. For the remaining three years, you'll focus on specific pharmacy subjects such as legislation and practice, therapeutics, complementary medicine and the quality use of medicines. You'll also examine public health issues in rural and remote Australia, and graduate with an Honours level degree. During your degree, you'll participate in a range of community and hospital placements where you'll develop practical pharmacy skills. The qualification awarded on graduation is recognized in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 8. Career outcomes This degree aims to equip you for work in any pharmacy setting, including rural pharmacies. It also gives you the chance to forge strong relationships with other health professionals, and it qualifies you to provide pharmacy services within the Australian Defense Forces. Many pharmacy graduates contribute to the health of communities by offering their services in community pharmacy, where others find great reward and stimulation as a pharmacist working in a hospital environment. As pharmacy is a very mobile profession, some people choose to live and work as a pharmacist in diverse parts of Australia, as well as other countries. But these aren’t the only career options. As pharmacy is largely a science-based discipline, graduates have also moved into roles in a range of areas including biotechnology, food sciences, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, paints, environmental science, environmental management, teaching and government policy making. As a pharmacy graduate, you can also consider postgraduate research (Masters or PhD) in diverse areas like biotechnology, environmental chemistry, microbiology, pharmacy practice, pharmacology and pharmacogenomics. Professional recognition The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC). Graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) may be eligible to apply for registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
