The Associate Degree in Arts is a two-year course, full time (or part-time equivalent), specifically intended to assist students gain skills and knowledge in arts and academic studies in general. The course offers introductory units in academic literacy, computer application and critical thinking, and its structure is designed to enable students to gain core knowledge in at least two arts disciplines. The course provides a supported pathway into university study and eligible graduates may progress onto a University of Tasmania Bachelor of Arts degree. The Associate Degree may also be taken as a stand-alone qualification. The Associate degree aims to meet the needs of students by: Offering foundation level units in academic literacies; Providing graduates with core knowledge in at least two arts disciplines; and Developing academic skills to allow students to articulate with confidence into a Bachelors Degree for further in-depth study. Course objectives The course aims to meet the needs of students who may have a limited background in arts, and in academic studies in general, by: providing foundation level units in academic literacies, titled 'Thinking and Writing at University', as well as units on 'Computer Applications' and 'Foundations of Critical Thinking'; providing opportunities to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills in a range of disciplines; providing graduates with core knowledge in at least two arts disciplines; and developing academic and scientific skills to allow students to articulate with confidence into a Bachelors Degree for further in-depth study. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the Associate Degree in Arts (AQF Level 6) graduates will be able to: Demonstrate broad theoretical and technical knowledge in one or more of the humanities, social sciences or creative arts disciplines. Critically identify, analyse, adapt and evaluate information and concepts in one or more humanities, social sciences or creative arts disciplines to complete a range of activities. Communicate knowledge and skills learned in one or more humanities, social sciences or creative arts disciplines effectively to a range of audiences. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice and/or scholarship. Demonstrate self-accountability by taking responsibility for own learning when working independently, and in collaboration with others. Course structure To qualify for the Associate Degree in Arts, students must successfully complete 200 pts in: Foundation Level Units students either select 0 - 50% of foundation units; or enrolment in foundation unit(s) may be a condition of offer to the degree and students will be advised which unit(s) to enrol in A minimum of 150% of undergraduate units offered by the College of Arts, Law and Education (from Bachelor of Arts for example), at least 50% of which will come from Intermediate Level (Second year units). To maximise the potential for articulation, students will be required to include 25% of Introductory Level units in one discipline to provide the basis for a major. Students will have a free choice of up to 50% of units from anywhere in the University in place of Foundation Level Units.

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires qualifications equivalent to the 12th year of schooling in Australia.
