Otago's unique Applied Science degrees link the excitement of science and the power of technology with the challenges of business. Applied Geology looks at how geological issues affect the lives of human beings. It studies the effects of naturally-occurring geological hazards, such as landslides and volcanic eruptions, environmental problems from such areas as waste disposal and groundwater contamination, and looks at how to manage and access natural resources, such as petroleum and minerals.

The minimum requirement for students is the completion of a high school qualification plus satisfactory completion of one year's study at an approved tertiary institution or successful completion New Zealand Foundation Year programme.
