University of MelbourneBachelor of Biomedicine (Major in Pathology)

专业简介

Pathology is the scientific study of the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences. It is a branch of science where factors which influence the shift from normal to abnormal and back again are studied at every level from the whole organism to the molecule. Therefore it overlaps with a range of biomedical disciplines such as anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology and immunology and genetics. The study of Pathology will provide students with background knowledge which will enable them to ask fundamental questions about the response of tissues and cells to injury, mechanisms of healing and the outcomes which may occur when healing is unsuccessful. Students who complete a Pathology major will study findings emerging from research laboratories which are currently investigating some of the most common and intractable diseases in our community e.g. cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. A Pathology major will also give students the opportunity to experience working in a team on an investigative project and enable them to develop both verbal and written communication skills. Diseases are a part of life - and death. Not long ago we didn’t know the root cause of most common diseases, and there is still so much to learn. Discover how pathology has made rapid advances by looking at disease from all angles: molecular, cellular, tissue, functional, biochemical and immunological. Use cutting-edge medical research and the latest understanding of human biology and molecular genetics to understand the mechanisms behind disease. You could end up doing diagnostic pathology in a biotechnology lab, or complete further study for a career in disease research or as a medical pathologist. In this major you will develop a broad understanding of disease from a molecular, cellular, tissue, functional, biochemical and immunological perspective. You will complete sequences of specialist and integrated subjects and apply current molecular and genetic methods to problems in pathological and medical practice. Your major structure This major can be completed through the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Biomedicine. BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICINE In your first year you will study 75 points of core subjects (usually six subjects) that most Biomedicine students will take to build an understanding of the structure and function of the body and consideration of the determinants of health and disease, including genetic and environmental influences. You will also undertake breadth studies. In second year you will study 50 points of core subjects made up of two semester long subjects as well as elective subjects in biomedicine or science disciplines and breadth studies. In your third year you will study 25 points (usually two subjects) of Biomedicine core subjects and 50 points (usually four subjects) that is deep and specialised study in pathology as well as other elective or breadth studies. Career outcomes After completing this major you might pursue career paths in laboratory and industry settings such as laboratories in universities, hospitals or research institutes; diagnostic laboratories in hospitals and private diagnostic pathology services; and biotechnology laboratories. You could also find work in education, the pharmaceutical or scientific equipment industries, journalism, or publishing.
