The Master of Music (Jazz & Improvisation) is a research degree which prepares you for a career in contemporary music performance. The program seeks to develop graduates who have a capacity for defining and managing a major creative research project characterized by originality and independence. Jazz & Improvisation candidates present a live performance and submit a dissertation that together should investigate issues and questions that are core to contemporary music making. You are provided with training in research methods, contemporary artistic practice and theories of arts and culture while developing individual mastery in your field of practice. The program invites research applicants with projects relating to contemporary music performance individually or in an interdisciplinary way.
On completion of this course students should be able to
Design, conduct and report independent and original research on a closely-defined project
Obtain well-developed and flexible problem-solving abilities appropriate to the discipline
Engage in independent and contextually-informed artistic practice
Communicate effectively the results of research and scholarship by oral and written communication;
Critically evaluate relevant scholarly literature and artistic practice
Have an understanding of and facility with scholarly conventions in the discipline area
On completion of the Jazz & Improvisation stream, students will have
Developed performance skills to the level expected at a live public performance
Ability to present research in publishable form or work towards incorporating findings in further research

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.

Music Performance (including conducting) and Jazz & Improvisation: a satisfactory audition

Musicology/Ethnomusicology, Music Psychology & Performance Science and Music Therapy: a satisfactory piece of scholarly writing
Interactive Composition: a satisfactory interactive composition folio
and
Submit a Research Proposal (except for Music Performance and Composition)
